Experts from Day One

Geographic Services, Inc. (GSI) was founded in 2002 as a geographic names analysis company. From the very beginning, we hired senior-level experts in geographic names and GIS. Our first contract was working with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency processing maps and geographic names.

We quickly found that we needed native speaking linguists to ensure accuracy, and cultural analysts to understand the people behind the language. Later we expanded our capabilities to include database architects and computer programmers.

Today, we’re at the forefront of Human Geography, which has fast become a discipline in great demand. Human Geography is understood through a combination of geographic information system (GIS), linguistic and sociocultural data. At GSI, we integrate all three areas of expertise—collecting data from a variety of authoritative primary sources—into a highly usable geospatial format that novices can easily manage, analyze and use for critical decision-making.

Our first geospatial database was created for field operators in Iraq to help them visualize the Human Geography of the region. With a geospatial representation of tribal locations, leadership, religious affiliations and social networks, operators were able to make better, more informed day-to-day decisions during the Iraqi Insurgency. This database has served as a model for producing subsequent databases.
