DataFlex is an effective tool for performing intelligent searches for geographic names data. It utilizes a fuzzy search as well as linguistic principles and allows the user to select flexible search criteria.
Capabilities/Features
The program searches for:
- Exact search matches
- Similar feature names based on misspellings or phonetic similarities
- Similar feature names based on regional dialects
- Historic place name variants
- Features with similar name Romanization
- Similar names with generics in reversed or reading order
- Similar names with inconsistent Unicode
Search Criteria
- Proximity: The program will search for similar feature names within a customizable distance (in decimal degrees).
- Flexible Search Area: The program can search the database in its entirety or focus on adjustable areas of interest.
- Accuracy level: The program can search for varying levels of feature name similarity with 100% indicating exact matches and smaller percentages having lower levels of spelling similarities. This takes into account phonetic similarities, misspellings and reversed generics.
- Designation Code or Class: The search criteria can be separated by designation code (such as “STM” for streams), by a broader feature designation class (such as hydro features), or left open.
- Language Specific Phonetic Rules: The program accounts for similar phonemes in its fuzzy search depending on the language in use.
- Regional Dialect Variants: The program’s phonetic search criteria can also be set to incorporate phonetic and generic differences to account for regional dialects.
